Olaf Breuning
Olaf Breuning is a Swiss-born artist based in New York, and his work is all-round: photography, video, installation, drawing, and sculpture.
With a background that includes a Japanese wife, this marks his first solo exhibition in Japan in quite a while.
He is truly a versatile artist, producing a wide variety of works such as drawings and sculptures… that’s the gist of it.
When I looked at the price list, one piece was a whopping 20,000 dollars (for some reason written in English)… A rather hard-to-reach high price of 2.4 million yen, which had me flustered…
The content of the works is very simple, with a light, airy style. Because of that, the message seems to come across directly.
The one that drew the most attention was the work below.
On the left are the words “young,” “Beautiful,” and “Rich”; on the right, “Old,” “Ugly,” and “Poor.” Look closely and you’ll see it’s a balance scale, and the side that carries the weight is… — that’s the work.
