Nichido Gallery’s Mignon Exhibition
I visited the “Mignon Exhibition,” a December fixture at Nichido Gallery.
Because every piece is size 4 (long side 33.4 cm) or smaller, there are many works within reach even for ordinary buyers. Yet, being a long-established gallery, it also has solid works by major masters mixed in—a delightful, well-conceived show that is a pleasure to view.
The works, arrayed as if to cover an entire wall, are overwhelming. An astonishing 400-plus pieces are exhibited all at once.
An entire wall of works—you can only marvel at how many they managed to gather!
There are so many works that even viewing them all is a task.
Shigeru Morita’s work is superb! The way he lays on the oil paint is exquisite. He has joined my list of favorite artists—though I can’t quite part with a million yen…
The red Mt. Fuji is lovely too!
I also spotted a work by Junkichi Mukai! This one was already sold, at 2.5 million yen. Oh my…
With so many works on show, finding one to your taste is hard, but you frequently encounter pieces that make you groan “Oh!” in admiration. Yukiko Kiyota’s work had a fine expressiveness that I liked.
Another artist who caught my eye was Mariko Fukushima. Her portraits of women had real pressure in the brushwork and a distinctive style.
There were all sorts of encounters, and it was a joy. I’ll be going again.
