Hiroko Otake “fleurs et papillons”
Seibu Shibuya is a store with a strong commitment to contemporary art.
This time I visited a solo exhibition by Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist Hiroko Otake.
The strength of Seibu Shibuya is that, under the concept of “Art meets Life,” the store unfolds its art including the interior design itself. The decoration near the entrance of Building B expressed Hiroko Otake’s worldview exactly as it is, and I found myself gazing at it, utterly captivated.

The exhibition space on the 8th floor was filled with works instantly recognizable as Otake’s. The piece near the entrance is a massive work priced at over 3 million yen.
Summary
I was surprised by the rather bold pricing of 70,000 yen per go (the Japanese canvas-size unit). This is truly the domain of a sought-after artist. Perhaps because of the high prices, or perhaps because it was still the first half of the run, the red “sold” stickers were not especially conspicuous.
The works were all beautiful, gorgeous pieces of butterflies dancing among flowers. Some used mirror-like materials, seemingly with a female audience in mind. There were also a few works with a more challenging flavor, and Otake’s signature style was on full display, creating an atmosphere overflowing with charm.
