I went to a solo exhibition by Ryo Kawada, who stood out brilliantly at the recent graduation and completion exhibitions of Tokyo Geidai.

The venue is the gallery “Bambinart Gallery,” located inside 3331 Arts Chiyoda.

It is a modest solo show of eight works.
A complete turn from the power he showed at Geidai—these works give a calm, composed impression.
The oil paint is applied so thinly that the weave of the canvas shows through, and the palette, too, is subdued, composed mainly of monotone.

These are works that seem to test the viewer’s imagination.
By stripping away visual information, the works seem to draw out our latent consciousness.
