3331 ART FAIR 2018
“3331 ART FAIR 2018,” a satellite program of Art Fair Tokyo 2018. It is a program built mainly around young artists who look set to break through in the years ahead. I visited on the opening day and found it thronging with visitors.
3331 ART FAIR draws out the diverse visions of our contemporaries who shape the art scene, creating new gateways and relationships to contemporary art. It is a challenge to build an alternative art fair framework that questions “artistic quality and marketability.” Both the “creative activity” and the “works” that artists give shape to—we evaluate the artistic value residing in each as social and economic value, aiming to expand our art market. The long-awaited 3331 ART FAIR, held in March 2018, turns the entire facility—the main gallery, gymnasium, classroom areas, rooftop, and more—into a single expanse of the fair. Chiemi Watanabe
Since it was the opening day, red dots (marking sold works) were still sparse across the venue—yet two artists sold out in the blink of an eye. One of them is Chiemi Watanabe.
She is a sheet-glass artist from Toyama.
At first glance, patterns flicker in and out within the thin glass, but on closer inspection a three-dimensional work unfolds inside it.
The rendering is extraordinarily fine and detailed, carrying a quiet intensity.
Three works were on show, each with a distinct character.
Though they are glasswork, depending on how you look at them they read as flat, painting-like pieces, or as three-dimensional sculptural ones.
The other artist was Masayo Keizuka.

Using sheet glass as my material, I probe the ground between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, pursuing an expression where the two intersect without limit. Even when I draw a line on the flat surface of a sheet of glass, the moment the glass has any thickness at all—even 1㎜—it ceases to be flat, and the act becomes a three-dimensional approach. The line drawings I make on sheet glass are also simplified, almost like written characters. Trace such line drawings back to their origin and they, too, come from the three-dimensional. Within a single sheet of glass a three-dimensional awareness is already embedded, forming a layered structure of the flat and the solid.
