3331 ART FAIR 2018
“3331 ART FAIR 2018,” a satellite program of Art Fair Tokyo 2018. It is a program built mainly around young artists who look set to break through in the years ahead. I visited on the opening day and found it thronging with visitors.
3331 ART FAIR draws out the diverse visions of our contemporaries who shape the art scene, creating new gateways and relationships to contemporary art. It is a challenge to build an alternative art fair framework that questions “artistic quality and marketability.” Both the “creative activity” and the “works” that artists give shape to—we evaluate the artistic value residing in each as social and economic value, aiming to expand our art market. The long-awaited 3331 ART FAIR, held in March 2018, turns the entire facility—the main gallery, gymnasium, classroom areas, rooftop, and more—into a single expanse of the fair. Masayo Keizuka
Since it was the opening day, red dots were still sparse across the venue—yet two artists sold out in the blink of an eye: Chiemi Watanabe and the sculptor Masayo Keizuka. Despite having a particularly large number of works on show, Masayo Keizuka’s pieces were hugely popular.

Life Has a Chair for Each Moment
The theme of this show is the “chair.”
Some figures sit properly in their chairs in orthodox fashion, while others strike comical, unconventional poses.
The subtle expressions on every figure left a strong impression. All of the works were listed as “Untitled”—No Title. They are pieces in which all sorts of feelings well up depending on how you look at them; it seems the reading is left to the viewer.
Seeing the artist’s own hairstyle made the works’ hairstyles click into place—a cute short cut.
What About the Prices?
Masayo Keizuka’s prices were remarkably low—conspicuously so within the venue. Most works were 22,680 yen (tax included), and even the largest was priced at 54,000 yen (tax included).
With every work sold out, she was clearly a popular artist—though perhaps the prices were set just a touch too low. It felt like a sign of great things to come. I have high hopes!

I make figures with a distinctive, unbalanced physique—bobbed hair, a long neck, and sloping shoulders—wearing a faintly sorrowful expression. They embody the sorrow of “that child,” who belongs nowhere and can be called neither doll nor sculpture. It is my very own figure, cast back at me by projecting myself onto memories that are unconsciously lost to the past. Colored with acrylic and mineral pigments on a base of wood-flour clay.
