Art Fair Tokyo 2018
At Art Fair Tokyo 2018, there was one booth that stood out as especially crowded—the “Gallery Tsubaki” booth.
There was a long line, and the crowd seemed to be almost entirely overseas visitors of Asian descent. Even the wall bore a handwritten notice clearly written not in Japanese but in Chinese.
Moe Nakamura
The one drawing the crowds was the sculptor Moe Nakamura. A naturally soothing beauty, she also dropped by the booth during the fair.
Her works center on three-dimensional pieces.
A few drawings were also on display.
The lottery item was a three-dimensional work that also appeared on the cover of the free paper handed out at the venue. Priced at 50,000 yen, it was a limited edition of 120.
When I glanced over, the line stretched all the way outside the venue, wrapped in an extraordinary fervor.
From what I heard from the gallery staff, she is highly popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Apparently many people even travel to Japan specifically for this. Perhaps it’s the “Hold me!” pose that people find so comforting.
The other works were priced relatively affordably.
It was so crowded that ordinary Japanese visitors could hardly get close.
She’s an artist whose work I’d like to view properly on another occasion.
