Morikazu Kumagai

Morikazu Kumagai, an artist from Gifu Prefecture. He remains a popular figure to this day.

At the retrospective held in 2018, the shifts across his lifelong career as an artist were laid out, and I was able to view it with great interest.

Heta mo E no Uchi

This book, “Heta mo E no Uchi,” gathers together the roughly one month of installments that ran from June of 1971 (Shōwa 46), when Morikazu Kumagai appeared in the Nikkei’s popular column “My Personal History.” It is a volume that Kumagai put together at the age of 91.

It was compiled to include commentary by Tetsuzo Tanikawa as well as “plates” reproduced in color and black-and-white photographs.

The book is now out of print; although it was reissued by Heibonsha in 2000, that edition too appears to be no longer in print, and it can currently be obtained only on the secondhand market.
