Ume to Sakura no Ada Kurabe
I visited the Nihonga two-person exhibition “Ume to Sakura no Ada Kurabe,” held in the lobby gallery on the 3rd floor of the main building of the Keio Plaza Hotel.
With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, the collaboration between Kanako Kiyomi’s cherry-blossom-themed works and Ai Kumehara’s plum-blossom works filled the space with the scent of spring.

When you enter the lobby, what greets you, mounted large across an entire wall, are Kumehara’s works.
The work that left the strongest impression on me was the piece titled “Spring Rain” (Harusame).
She appears to employ a technique of layering additional washi paper over the painted work, and a sense of three-dimensionality came through.
It seemed to express a world in which petals layer over one another again and again — a wonderful work.
Besides the lobby, there were also works displayed indoors.
Recently she also seems to be taking on works with camellia flowers as their motif.
Since the start of 2018 she has been showing in exhibitions one after another, and she seems to keep sending out new works constantly.
She also appears to have plans to expand overseas going forward, making her an artist whose future is all the more exciting!
