Atsuko Yamashita “in the flower garden”
I visited Atsuko Yamashita’s solo exhibition “in the flower garden.” The venue is “Makii Masaru Fine Arts,” located right by Asakusabashi Station.
Atsuko Yamashita had only recently graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. She is still a very young artist. I had taken note of her when I saw her graduation exhibition, so I came on the very first day.
The works are painted with oil paints mixed with a generous amount of oil, applied to white canvas with a gentle touch — that is their distinctive feature. Though they are oil paintings, they have the smoothness and transparency of watercolors.
While keeping the theme of “flowers” at the center, the gallery was drawn together into a gorgeous world, with a variety of sizes ranging from large 200-go works down to small pieces.
Her skillful use of white seems to be one of her defining traits. White pairs well with the pale, soft colors, and together they build a gentle world.
A work with a red woman and a blue angel as its two motifs, one depicting tulip-like flowers, another rendering the diamond shapes the artist reportedly loves — nearly 80 works, each in sync with the others, came together to form a single world.
Most of the works this time are new, painted for the solo show over roughly a month.
Merchandise
The merchandise corner was well-stocked, too. Besides standard items like mugs and postcards, there were several small works, which was a treat.
