I visited “Kawauso Gallery,” a gallery in Kyobashi. This is a solo exhibition by Daisuke Kudo.
Daisuke Kudo “MAY DAY”
Daisuke Kudo is currently a 40-year-old office worker. He is a late-blooming artist who has been active since around 2014.
Everything on display at the solo show was a “portrait of a woman.”
He says the nose, neck, and décolletage are the areas he is especially conscious of. Viewers will first sense a “texture of the skin” unlike anything they have seen before. The coloring of the skin around the cheeks, the touch of the brush, and the texture are all remarkably refined, sure to leave a pleasant impression.
While he possesses strong drawing skills, the way he renders hair is simple, and the contrast with the way he paints skin is surely one of the charms of Daisuke Kudo’s work.
The works are priced at about 9,000 yen per go (the standard Japanese canvas-size unit). Older pieces seem to be set even lower, but the prices are still quite affordable. Many of the works are F4 in size, which I felt was a nicely cohesive scale. By the middle of the run, roughly 60–70% of the works had been sold.
It’s a shame that photography is not allowed at Kawauso Gallery, making it hard to introduce the other works, but I have selected a few from the official website.
His next solo exhibition is scheduled for around June 2019. That’s a year away, but I’m already looking forward to it!
