Design Festa vol.47

This time we visited the spring Design Festa (commonly known as “Desafes”) vol.47 on its opening day (May 12, 2018).

“Live painting” is known as one of the highlights of Design Festa, and once again this time many artists took part.

One of them, “Harumizuru,” is an artist whose work I had seen before at a solo exhibition.

Harumizuru

We arrived around midday on the opening day. Since it was just after the live painting had begun, the work was still in its early stages.

She apparently sketches an underdrawing with crayon before moving on to paint.

With a few exceptions, most exhibitors at Design Festa are artists who actively encourage photography and social media posts. It felt as though many visitors were browsing around with smartphone in hand, checking their Twitter timelines to find artists to their liking.

She had also prepared standard items such as postcards and mugs, and was selling original artworks as well.

Completed

Here is the finished work. A girl with her trademark bob haircut, together with a pink rabbit. The subject matter, raising an anti-war message, is so characteristic of Harumizuru.

The common theme running through the works she creates is "to make as many lives as possible happy."

I had the chance to speak with her in person—a truly pure and delicate woman.

At Design Festa, there was the pleasure of being able to talk directly with artists like her and to get a sense of their personalities.

We wish her ever greater success!
