Design Festa vol.47
The spring Design Festa (commonly called “Desafes”) vol.47 — this time we visited on the opening day (May 12, 2018).
One of Design Festa’s well-known highlights is “live painting,” and this time again, many artists took part.
Our attention was drawn to Mami Wakasugi.

Mami Wakasugi
We remember that Mami Wakasugi previously held a solo exhibition at Art Complex Center. At this Design Festa there was no display or sale of original works — she seemed to be focused on live painting, alongside selling postcards and art books.

Foreign visitors were also expressing their appreciation with words like “COOL!” and “I Like it!”

Live Painting
Mami Wakasugi’s live painting is a one-shot affair with no preliminary sketch.

She uses oil-based pens, carefully layering line upon line, one by one.

She kindly let us photograph her at work.

Even during the live painting, various people came up to speak with her.
“The lines are really nice…!” said one elderly visitor. Watching her hand move without hesitation, one is struck by a strange, quiet feeling.

Because the schedule doesn’t allow adding color after the pen drawing is done,

Completion
We were not able to see it with our own eyes, but the piece was successfully completed.
