Moe Hayashi “A Room with a View”
I went to see Moe Hayashi’s solo exhibition “A Room with a View.” The venue is MAKII MASARU FINE ARTS, a gallery in Asakusabashi. It is a two-story gallery just steps from Asakusabashi Station, where you can take your time viewing the works.

The works seem to depict the interior of a room, or the scenery seen from within it, and are credited with titles such as “Tree,” “house,” “chair,” and “garden.” The canvases themselves seem to exist like windows.
The canvases, which one would expect to be stretched neatly over their wooden frames, are instead loosely attached rather than firmly fixed. At first glance they look like window frames, yet they feel like windows existing within the room itself.
I also found the display, in which the canvases seemed simply placed within a room, intriguing.
These are works that make you want to place one, unframed, in a windowless room. That daydream went unfulfilled, however, as the piece I wanted was simply too small in size… The vividness of the greens left a strong impression. Definitely an artist to keep an eye on!
