Ryan McGinley
I went to see the solo exhibition of Ryan McGinley, a photographer highly praised as “the most important photographer in America.”
The venue was Tomio Koyama Gallery in Roppongi, and it was bustling with young men and women who looked to be in their twenties. He truly is a hugely popular photographic artist.
Polaroid Photographs
The sight of countless portrait works captured on Polaroid film, all lined up in a row, was truly spectacular.
Rather than the kind of photographer who dazzles through image processing, he struck me as someone whose work—capturing real, everyday people just as they are—carries a palpable warmth of the body.
Unfortunately the number of works on view was small, so I was able to see only a small part of Ryan McGinley. He’s an artist whose work I want to see, and feel, far more of.
