Design Festa vol.47
The spring Design Festa (commonly called “Desafes”) vol.47 — this time we visited on the opening day (May 12, 2018).
Amid the exuberant displays of young artists, one young man caught our eye — presenting his work with the quiet purity of an art-school graduate. For this writer, his was one of the most memorable displays at Design Festa this time. We very much want to introduce him.
Taiki Kawase
Taiki Kawase is a visual artist based in the Kansai region. Perhaps in his mid-thirties?
His motifs are an unusual combination — whales and giraffes. Cats also make an occasional appearance.
Employing dot patterns, his works arrange the animals symbolically across the picture plane.
The works lined up before us had motion, a sense of dynamism, and an overflowing charm.
The sizes are just right — inviting enough that you find yourself wanting to hang one at home.
The scale worked well for Design Festa, but as we looked on we found ourselves wishing to see him paint freely on a much larger canvas.
An artist to watch, without a doubt!
