Tomoo Gokita

Tomoo Gokita’s solo exhibition appears to be drawing big crowds.

I visited too, and the singular world that only Tomoo Gokita could create unfolds there—thoroughly worth seeing.

Signing Event

Midway through the run of that exhibition, “PEEKABOO,” an announcement of a signing event appeared on the website of gallery 5, the gallery shop at Tokyo Opera City.

There was no way I could miss it! So I mapped out my schedule and went along on the day.

Since it was midway through the run, perhaps out of consideration for visitors who had already bought the exhibition catalogue, the eligible titles were broadened, and the rule became that purchasing any of the several related books would qualify you. It was held with a limit of one autograph per person.

Maybe it worked in my favor that I went at a late hour—it was unexpectedly empty, which was lucky. It probably also had something to do with the announcement being under-publicized.

Tomoo Gokita, with a charming hat as an accent, gave a rather endearing impression.

I got an autograph myself. We chatted a little while he was signing, too. His voice had a mellow, grown-up quality to it.

The autographs center on little illustrations, and it seems the pattern varies from person to person.
