[Solo Exhibition] Tomoo Gokita "PEEKABOO" @ Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery

【個展】五木田智央(Tomoo Gokita)「PEEKABOO」@東京オペラシティ アートギャラリー

Tomoo Gokita “PEEKABOO”

I visited Tomoo Gokita’s solo exhibition “PEEKABOO.” It is a gallery on the 3rd floor of Opera City.

As you enter, a huge work greets you. Its title is “Come Play with Me.”

It feels like a display that says, “Enjoy the exhibition!”

Tomoo Gokita’s works are so distinctive that you can recognize his signature “Gokita style” at a single glance.

Looking closely, the paint is not thickly applied; you can make out careful brushwork alongside bold depiction.

Precisely because it is a black-and-white monotone, you can see how many shades of white and black are intermingled.

Every one of the works is enormous. Overwhelming, full of impact.

In the latter half of the exhibition, this large-scale installation was a delight.

It was an exceptionally satisfying solo exhibition.
A signing session was also held during the run, and I went along.

The art critic Kurose made a post, as below, criticizing the curation.
It does not directly reject Gokita’s work, but I could also understand the points he raised.

He is surely an artist who will be ever more active going forward. One to watch!
