Yuichi Hirako “Special Exhibition”
I visited Yuichi Hirako’s solo exhibition. The venue is WAITINGROOM (Edogawabashi), the gallery he is affiliated with.
It seems a post office used to occupy the space, and you can still see the traces of “POST OFFICE.”
He is said to be a prolific artist, and older works were on display alongside newer ones. The pieces framed with wooden borders are his latest works.
This exhibition is a special show held concurrently with “project N71: Yuichi Hirako” (April 14 – June 24, 2018) at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.
Taking as his theme the coexistence of plants and human beings, and the questions about the relationships that emerge from it, Hirako presents works across media — centered on painting, but also spanning drawing, sculpture, installation, and sound performance — and has continued to cast a stone into situations where a boundary line is felt to exist between nature and humankind, offering an opportunity to reflect.
For this exhibition, from among past works created based on such themes, we have selected and displayed a range of works of various sizes and media — not only paintings but also drawings and three-dimensional pieces.— Excerpted from the WAITINGROOM official website
