Katsumi Ida, “Memory of Sand”
I visited Katsumi Ida’s solo exhibition “Memory of Sand.” The venue is Gallery Seiho in Ginza 8-chome.
Katsumi Ida is a stone sculptor whose work takes “immeasurable time”—memories and recollections—as its theme. For this solo exhibition, he combined four new sculptures with motifs of ruins and ships with sand from the ancient strata of the Tottori Sand Dunes, presenting the whole as a single installation.
Katsumi Ida is from Tottori Prefecture and is currently a professor at Tokyo Zokei University. His sons, Daisuke Ida and Yukimasa Ida, are also artists—truly a family of artists.
The sand exhibited here was brought in from the Tottori Sand Dunes in his home of Tottori Prefecture. The works seem to express the time and places he has accumulated, and it was a space that conveyed a real sense of power.
