Taguchi Art Collection Exhibition
The Taguchi Art Collection consists of approximately 450 works of contemporary art (as of June 2018) collected from around the world by the businessman Hiroshi Taguchi.
The collection does not own a dedicated venue; instead, it responds to loan requests from museums and other institutions nationwide, holding exhibitions across the country. I visited the exhibition at the Hiratsuka City Museum of Art, held from April to June 2018.

Satoru Aoyama, “About Painting 2014-2015”
One of the works exhibited from the collection was by textile artist Satoru Aoyama. I had previously had the chance to see his outstanding work at his solo exhibition at Mizuma Art Gallery.

The work exhibited at the Taguchi Art Collection was “About Painting 2014-2015.”
It plots renowned painters of the 20th century along axes with “Personal–Social” on the horizontal and “Radical–Conservative” on the vertical,
and arranges each artist’s representative work, recreated in embroidered art, at the corresponding position. On top of that, Satoru Aoyama’s own handwritten commentary is inscribed throughout, forming a single completed piece.
This work was originally presented at Art Fair Tokyo in 2014 and was reportedly sold to the general public; after its acquisition by the Taguchi Art Collection, the board seems to have been reconstructed.

The horizontal axis “Personal–Social” and the vertical axis “Radical–Conservative” — the choice of these evaluative axes was, Aoyama himself said, an intuitive one on his own part. Since it is a subjective mapping, the placements would naturally shift depending on the viewer, as Aoyama himself pointed out.
Not only the placement on the map, but also the artist-by-artist comments were highly distinctive and made the work delightfully fun to read.
He also mentioned that he would like to keep updating it and eventually complete the roster of famous painters.
