-Rin- Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Art Market 2018

“Rin,” the annual art market held at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi, is a project in which eleven domestic galleries and seven projects by Mitsukoshi present and sell their works.

It is a delightful occasion, gathering a wide range of genres and a great many works all in one place.

Photography is permitted, so you can enjoy it without purchasing anything, and it is a rare chance to look at works by masters — the sort of pieces you see in museums — with price tags attached (and, if you feel inclined, actually buy them).

This time I would like to introduce KAZ WATABE, an artist who expresses a distinctive worldview.

KAZ WATABE

His works feel as if a scene from a picture book has been cut out — quietly narrative pieces.

You end up gazing at them, projecting yourself onto the characters or imagining someone else in them, as if being asked how the story ought to be read.

Even the more unusual, “otherworldly” characters are drawn with a gentle touch, so they come across as familiar presences one accepts without any sense of distance.
