[News] Confirmed for April 2019!! "Klimt Exhibition" Announces 3 Oil Paintings

【News】2019年4月開催決定!!「クリムト展」油彩画の3作品が発表

On August 8, 2018, the following release was announced.

“Klimt Exhibition” confirmed to open next spring — the long-awaited news!
April 23 (Tue) – July 10 (Wed), 2019
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Ueno Park, Tokyo)
Masterpieces including “Judith I” — the largest gathering of Klimt oil paintings ever to be shown in Japan!

This 2019 exhibition, marking 100 years since Klimt’s death, also falls in the year that celebrates 150 years of Austria–Japan diplomatic relations.

And this time… amazingly…

Roughly 20 Klimt oil paintings — the largest such gathering ever in Japan — will assemble!

—that’s the news that just arrived. A truly precious chance to see Klimt’s works together.

The three works whose information was released today are the following, out of the 20 to be shown.

[1] Judith I (1901)

One of this exhibition’s headline works is “Judith I” — a distinctly Klimt-esque piece.

Reproductions of mural works too!

Also coming to Japan is a precise reproduction of Klimt’s 34-meter-long mural “Beethoven Frieze.” The reproduction will recreate its installation at the Vienna Secession Building, and it will be fascinating to see how that display is realized.

The exhibition will center on works from the Belvedere in Vienna — home to what is arguably the world’s premier Klimt collection — tracing the evolution of Klimt’s career alongside works by his contemporaries who were active with him. The non-Klimt selections are also something to look forward to. Might Egon Schiele make an appearance, one wonders.

Copy also promises that “through Japanese crafts and paintings introduced in late-19th-century Vienna, the exhibition will explore the influence of Japonisme on Klimt,” suggesting Japanese works will be on view as well.

Information about the works and highlights will be added to the official site in stages. Looking forward to it!!
