I visited “Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2018.”
“Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi” (a.a.t.m.) is a contest event for emerging artists selected from the graduation exhibitions of art universities and colleges of fine arts, with exhibitions by nominees who caught the eye of the jurors held at various venues centered on the Marunouchi area.
Since it has been held since 2007, it is a long-running event with more than ten years of history.
As it takes place in a location with heavy foot traffic, I think it is an event that expands opportunities for encounters for both the artists and for us.
Gyoko Underground Gallery
This time I went to the “Gyoko Underground Gallery,” one of the a.a.t.m. venues. It is the venue that boasts the largest number of exhibits at a.a.t.m.
The Gyoko Underground Gallery is an exhibition space in the underground passage connecting Tokyo Station with the Marunouchi Building and the Shin-Marunouchi Building. It is directly linked to the JR Tokyo Station underground passage, and is conveniently located right after you exit the ticket gates of the Marunouchi Line.
Ryo Kawada

Based on “Western painting,” while depicting something imitative, I continue to contemplate a form of painting in which I myself can truly feel a sense of reality.
I am drawing my imitation art based on “western art”, trying to draw the art which I find the true reality in it.
I have featured Ryo Kawada many times in past articles, but seeing his works in a different location changes the impression of them, and I never grow tired of viewing them.
The still-life “Vanitas” in particular is wonderful.

Narumi Sasaki’s works are paintings, but they incorporate motifs from the natural world and are excellent pieces that stir the emotions. She is an artist I had noticed after seeing her works at a graduation exhibition.
I cast my vote for her, and I even made an inquiry because I wanted to acquire one of her works.

This was my first time seeing works by Yurina Okada of Kyoto University of Art and Design. They are monochrome photographs, but wonderful!
Besides the three works introduced here, you can see many pieces by emerging artists all at once.
There is the pleasure of finding an artist you love and following their growth.
The works that were given the chance to be exhibited in the heart of the great metropolis of Tokyo seemed to be delighted themselves, and I felt a special radiance from them.
I hope this event continues for a long time to come!
