[Art & Gourmet] A Geidai-Student Favorite — The Deep Bond Between Curry and Art at "Lucky" in Nezu

【アート&グルメ】藝大学生御用達〜根津「Lucky〜ラッキー」で楽しむカレーとアートの深い関係

Curry Restaurant “Lucky”

A short walk from Nezu Station toward Sendagi, I’d like to introduce the curry restaurant “Lucky.”

Lucky is a shop that stakes everything on curry alone. The menu consists of just two items — “Special Lucky Curry” and “Special Lucky Red Curry” — with a choice of pork or chicken. Alcoholic drinks are also on the menu, which is a nice touch. The red curry is the spicy option and comes especially recommended. I love spicy food, so I ordered the red curry.

A bonito-flake soup comes free of charge.

The “Special Lucky Red Curry” has a dark-colored roux plated with carrot, potato, and pork at the center. A chili-oil-like spicy condiment had been drizzled over the top.

The curry is simmered for over 72 hours, giving it a rich, concentrated flavor. The hint of peanut is a nice touch.

Now, this curry restaurant is famous as a place with deep ties to the art world. Believe it or not, art is displayed right there inside the shop.

Next to the register, a sign reads “We regularly show works, mainly by Tokyo University of the Arts students!”
And it’s not just display — depending on the piece, works are also available for purchase.

On the day I visited, works by fourth-year Tokyo University of the Arts students were on view.

The distance to the works depends on where you sit, so it seems you’ll need the knack of surveying the art the moment you walk in.
It’s an odd pairing, curry and art — but eating a plate of curry rice while looking at works fills both stomach and heart.
