Reina Taniho, “Interbreeding and Stretching”

I visited Reina Taniho’s solo exhibition “Interbreeding and Stretching.” The venue is Sei Art Space in Roppongi.

I had seen Reina Taniho’s works before on a few occasions, but almost always in the form of one or two large pieces at group shows. This was my first time seeing a solo exhibition surrounded by so many of her works.

The stark white walls were covered with her works, the space saturated with Taniho’s colours — like a glamorous party in progress.

Perhaps because sales were in mind, this solo exhibition featured a lot of small works.
A cat piece — rare for her — was on view, and I was able to see works I had never seen before.

I had hoped to find a small piece that stood out… but Taniho’s large works are overwhelmingly better. That said, she is an established artist, so acquiring one comes at a serious price.
Flipping through the catalogue on sale, I couldn’t help entertaining a greedy thought: couldn’t the paintings realised in her large works be brought to life in small ones too?
