Roppongi Crossing 2019
“Roppongi Crossing” is a series of exhibitions held once every three years by Mori Art Museum since 2004, offering a fixed-point survey of the Japanese contemporary art scene.
The 6th edition, held this time, marks a series first: it is co-curated exclusively by three Mori Art Museum curators (Reiko Tsubaki, Hiroshi Tokuyama, and Haruko Kumakura), and introduces around 25 Japanese artist groups, primarily born in the 1970s and 80s.
“Roppongi Crossing 2019: Connexions” focuses on the “connections” that come into view through contemporary expression.
As information and communication technology and various other technologies evolve at accelerating speed, our lives become more convenient — but new problems arising from that are also coming to the surface.
Even as the diversity of values has come to be recognized, the internet — supposedly open — has, especially in the realm of social media, encouraged the alignment and reinforcement of opinion and perception, paradoxically creating closed communities. Frictions born of biased political views, ever-widening economic disparities — a variety of “divisions” seem to be surfacing.
Against this backdrop, artists use their work to present all kinds of “connections” — linking opposites, fusing the heterogeneous, and making visible the ties that were already inherently there. These offer a critical viewpoint on contemporary society and a shift in perspective, and they may become hints for how to face those “divisions.” I hope the new “connections” that emerge from this exhibition will provide a meaningful opportunity to confront the “now” of Japan.
