Miwa Ogasawara, “Fragile”
To see Miwa Ogasawara’s solo exhibition “Fragile,” we visited one of our favorite galleries, MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY (Gaienmae).
Attentive service, careful explanations, and a comfortable viewing environment — it is one of our very favorite galleries.
The way a restricted palette and the finely tuned expressiveness of color present viewers with limitless possibilities gives one the illusion of being absorbed into the works themselves.
A number of large-scale works were on display,
Beyond this, in the staff room further inside, works that could not be fitted into the display space were held in storage as if awaiting their turn. Since the outside of the canvas — the space around it — is essential to these works, there is a constraint that only a limited number can be shown at once.
We had a look through the portfolio and were also able to see earlier works featuring “glass beads” as a motif, of which she had produced many. Miwa Ogasawara’s way of painting harmonized beautifully with the glass beads, and it left a deep impression.
The worldview she constructs with her skillful expression has established itself in an unshakable position, and the space simply drew us in and swallowed us up. A highly recommended exhibition.
