I visited Shinya Nagashima’s solo exhibition “Capital of the Dragon,” held at Gallery Hanakagesho in Nezu.
Gallery Hanakagesho (Hanakagesho) is a gallery specializing in netsuke. Shinya Nagashima is affiliated with the gallery as one of its artists.
《Dragon Goddess》is a large work, with a presence that seems to command the entire gallery space.
Some works held in private collections were also on view.

We were allowed to actually hold the netsuke works in hand. Even the holes for the cord were properly made.
Every work is of overwhelming quality, pushing the limits of craftsmanship.
Among contemporary netsuke artists working in Japan, he is surely one whose name will be etched as a master of the form.
I look forward to seeing what he creates next.
