Yuma Yoshimura “reflection in a squall”
I visited Yuma Yoshimura’s solo exhibition “reflection in a squall,” held at Taku Sometani Gallery.
I had been looking forward to the print works of Yuma Yoshimura, a printmaker, but the moment I opened the entrance door, three-dimensional works were what caught my eye.
Here are the print works. However, rather than the prints themselves, the “printing blocks” are presented as the artworks.
Thin aluminum sheets are attached to wooden frames, their surfaces engraved with delicate line drawings and colored in monotone. Instead of being carved for the purpose of printing, they are finished with the aim of standing alone as artworks.
Personally, I was drawn to the three-dimensional works. It seems this exhibition marks the first time he produced and displayed three-dimensional pieces.
The works are made by coloring driftwood and, like the printing blocks, combining parts made of aluminum.
The sound of water played as BGM in the venue, and elements of the artworks evoked water droplets, adding to the atmosphere.
Many works were mounted on the walls facing in various directions, offering the pleasure of appreciating them by mentally shifting the angles to enjoy their forms.
The gallery interior was unified in monotone, reminding me of Natsumi Tomita’s solo exhibition I saw previously. *Photos are uploaded in color.
You’ll realize that being immersed in a world of only black and white is an extraordinary space. It’s fun!
