ARIGATO SAKURAGAOKA

I visited “ARIGATO SAKURAGAOKA,” an art event produced by ART PHOTO TOKYO.
The Shibuya Sakuragaoka district, currently being redeveloped, has already been vacated of tenants and now feels like a ghost town.
“Yamaha Electone City Shibuya,” the venue for this event, is one of those buildings.
The entire five-story building has been given over to this event.

The venue spans five floors, from the first to the fifth. Each floor’s real-estate floor plan has been turned into a map.

The floor plans mapped onto a building slated for demolition — quite an artistic touch.

Because this is an ART PHOTO TOKYO project, photographs made up a large share of the artworks on view.

Shuichi Maiyama uses a LEICA camera; his monochrome photographs appear to have been shot on Leica.

A dense, richly-charged corner gathering the master artists.

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Seascapes” series — the photograph used on the cover of U2’s album “No Line On The Horizon” — was printed in an edition of 100. This particular piece is signed in person by the members of U2, making it a genuine treasure (not for sale, of course).

Masaki Yamabe’s work is a video piece that visualizes the wake traces of actual vessels.
The upper image records a single month — January 2017 — while the image below it compresses 100 years of accumulated data, from 1750 onward.
One month and one hundred years, rendered in a single visual language.

On the first-floor parking level, monitors streamed video for an installation synchronized with sound.

Walking through the exhibition felt like an expedition through a maze-like building. Rich in volume and deeply satisfying as a curated program.
