Ibusuki Returns: A Solo Exhibition

I visited Mr. Ibusuki’s solo exhibition. The venue is The Artcomplex Center of Tokyo in Shinanomachi.

There are no figure paintings at all: Mr. Ibusuki works exclusively in landscapes, rendered in meticulous pen and watercolor from extremely small formats upward.
He is an artist whose choice of motifs — cutting out emotive scenes of old Japan — is particularly striking.

The coloring, applied with watercolor, is kept to a minimum, and this restraint has the effect of tightly pulling each work together.Prices too start from ¥2,000, making the works easy to acquire — you can sense a deliberate intent to build a base of fans.

He also seems conscious of scale, offering a variety of sizes — including some large-format pieces on view.
Past works held in private collections were also shown, and the gallery — filled with so many pieces — was a space overflowing with Mr. Ibusuki’s talent.
