I visited Thomas Doyle’s first solo exhibition in Japan, “HOLD YOUR FIRE.” The venue is DIESEL ART GALLERY in Shibuya.

A wealth of charming miniature works, likely to appeal strongly to a Japanese audience, was on display.
Look closely and each miniature figure is holding what appears to be a placard.
Precisely because they are small figures, the statement each of them makes seems to come forward all the more powerfully.

Though these figures are smaller than us humans, I found myself absorbing the energy they radiate as I looked at the work.
In the larger pieces, the scenes cut from everyday life resonated with the title “HOLD YOUR FIRE,” and seemed to sound an alarm against a troubled era.
