I viewed the exhibition “Marcel Duchamp and Japanese Art.” The venue is the Tokyo National Museum.
Duchamp is famously known for the impactful display of merely signing a urinal, but through this exhibition, I could also see another side of him as an orthodox artist through his early paintings and other works, leaving me with a very favorable impression.
Japanese Art
The final exhibition zone contained a somewhat tacked-on section on Japanese art.
Borrowing Duchamp’s artistic career to talk about Japanese art was very poorly received, and the plan appeared to have been crafted with commercial considerations in mind. Seeing the commercial aspect so directly is not a pleasant experience.
Because the Duchamp exhibition itself shone so brilliantly, this addition felt all the more regrettable.
