I visited the two-person exhibition “one piece & a whole” by Sakurako Hattori and Mai Takada. The venue is MASATAKA CONTEMPORARY.
Sakurako Hattori
Sakurako Hattori is an artist who graduated from the Japanese Painting department of Tama Art University, and all of her works are painted in the Japanese painting style.
Her works are composed of motifs of foods and drinks, but like trick art, a closer look reveals that they cite something else or embed hidden gimmicks, offering the joy of viewing them as if solving puzzles.
This is a piece that translates a weather map into a pizza. When you overlay the film onto the painting, the shapes line up perfectly, which is delightful.
The work themed around the Windows 95 startup screen is also very well crafted and quite impressive.
The work in which a maze is incorporated into the painting, tracing the path from start to goal, is also charming.
Mai Takada
The pieces with an Instagram-conscious display method, likely to appeal to young women, are the creations of Mai Takada.
Beyond simply crafting cakes, the plates and various cakes are printed with old masterpiece paintings.
The two-person exhibition seems to have been realized through their common thread of food-themed works. I found Sakurako Hattori’s works particularly interesting.
I look forward to their future new works.
