I visited Suzume Uchida’s solo exhibition “Heart of Thorns.” The venue was Room 306 of the Ginza Okuno Building.
The exhibition centered on self-portraits, presenting 12 new works.
I visited on the second day, a Saturday. There was already a line before the 2:00 PM opening. Given the small venue, the crowd was so heavy that entry had to be restricted.
Uchida’s works express the emotions she carries inside, overflowing across every canvas — each piece feels dread-inducing in its intensity. From the moment you lay eyes on one, it seems to seize hold of something more than just the viewer’s gaze.
The exhibition takes Uchida’s own portraits as its theme.
Since Yohji Yamamoto HOMME rolled out her work as collaboration items in its 2018 Spring/Summer collection, her popularity seems to have surged even further. Driven by demand, prices have soared, and the difficulty of acquiring works — sold by lottery — keeps rising.
She is an artist whose future activities I very much look forward to.
Regarding sales at the Suzume Uchida exhibition
All works will be sold via a lottery-based application accepted at the venue.

● Application location: Suzume Uchida exhibition venue — Ginza Okuno Building, Room 306, 1-9-8 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
● How to apply: Please fill out the application form provided at the venue on the spot and hand it to a staff member.
● Announcement of results: From December 15 onward, we will contact only the winners by phone or email.[Notes]
