The Yamagata Biennale left a strong impression as a superb art festival in 2018 as well.
The Bunshokan, the main venue of the Yamagata Biennale, is officially named the Yamagata Prefectural Local Museum and is a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property. Thanks to the restoration work, the building’s interior is solidly maintained.
Set within spacious grounds, it has the feel of an art museum or history museum.
It also served as one of the few outdoor exhibition spots of the Yamagata Biennale.

Each room inside the building functioned as an independent exhibition space.

In the Assembly Hall on the site, an exhibition by Ryoji Arai drew an enthusiastic crowd.
Meanwhile, in the courtyard, “Yoruko” appeared and performed.
