Masako Yasuki “rock at dawn, water mirror in silence”
I visited Masako Yasuki’s solo exhibition. The venue was The Artcomplex Center of Tokyo.
For this solo exhibition, alongside many new and recent works displayed across the roughly 330-square-meter venue, I decided to place a pair of “landscape paintings” I made during my student years.
Has “the world” changed since then? Amid the raw, aching cycle of things being born and things vanishing from the earth day after day, some borders have disappeared while new nation names have appeared on the map; there are words that have fallen out of use and lands that can no longer be inhabited, and yet places we once could not reach can now be glimpsed from the far side of the world. The “progress” of “technology” will likely gain still more momentum.
On the other hand, no matter how much what we perceive as “the everyday” may drift, no matter how dizzyingly society may change, on the reverse side of it all, the deep layer of the relationship between the human being — bearer of a finite body — and the world lies quietly, unchanged. As I expose myself to landscapes, take frottages of the land, walk about researching, and go on painting, it suddenly shows its face.Masako Yasuki
Large works were laid out in orderly fashion across the spacious venue.
The installation projecting mapping onto the pine-forest-screen piece was particularly wonderful.
