Toshiko Okanoue “Miracles of Silence”
I visited Toshiko Okanoue’s solo exhibition “Miracles of Silence.” The venue is the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in Meguro, Tokyo.
Toshiko Okanoue is an artist renowned for her works using the collage technique.
Her works, created by cutting out photographic materials from 1950s foreign magazines such as TIME, LIFE, and Vogue, were highly acclaimed, and she was discovered by Shuzo Takiguchi, who led the Surrealist movement in Japan.

Regarding “fashion,” an important keyword in Toshiko Okanoue’s practice during the 1950s, classic dresses from that era were also on display.

Works composed of photographs cut out and combined — created in the chaotic postwar era, when the status of women was surely different from today. With fashion as one of its pillars, the force emanating from these works carried the sense of energy stored within silence.
This exhibition includes many pieces from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in the United States.
It is a precious exhibition gathering a wide variety of collage works.
