SBI Art Auction
On February 2, 2019, the art auction venue – timed as if to coincide with the Chinese Lunar New Year – was buzzing with excitement.
The total hammer price for the day was an impressive 495,431,500 yen, with a sell-through rate of 88.5%.
I would like to report from the preview held beforehand, with photos and hammer prices (all figures include the buyer’s premium).

The spotlight artist of the day was Tomoo Gokita. All of his works sold well above their estimates.

Right: Tomoo Gokita, “Sharp Tongue”, sold for 12,650,000 yen *The catalogue cover work

Right: Tomoo Gokita, “Acrylic paint on Towa Tei LP record”, sold for 506,000 yen

Right: Yoshitomo Nara, “Rainy Day (Nara E-2002-006)”, sold for 2,070,000 yen

Center: Ayako Rokkaku, “Untitled”, sold for 2,645,000 yen
Right: Ayako Rokkaku, “Untitled”, sold for 1,322,500 yen

Upper right: Kifumi Komura, “Red Fruit”, sold for 172,500 yen
Lower right: Miki Kariya, “Walking through the Flower Field”, sold for 253,000 yen

Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Kohei Nawa, Tomoo Gokita… it’s a strange kind of space where works by such major artists are simply on display, free of charge.
It’s also a place where, with a little effort, you can encounter works within reach of your budget.
Why not give it a try?
