Ai Yamaguchi, “Kiu”
Mizuma Art Gallery, exhibiting at Art Fair Tokyo 2019, presented Ai Yamaguchi in a solo-exhibition format.
The solo exhibition title “Kiu” is said to be a breakdown of the character “柳” (willow), representing tree (木), rabbit (卯), and spring.
The major work 《On the Day We Meet Again》, created after she saw shards of Arita ware, is composed by joining ceramic shards into a single work—a new work reflecting the idea of “wanting to incorporate the passage of time that the shards hold.”
It contains fine patterns with motifs such as cellular tissue, and a complex composition can also be seen in the painting. Due to the venue space, the exhibition couldn’t join each of the fragments together, but the finished form seems to have become a work like the next photo.
There were many porcelain works, giving a slightly different impression from her previous works.
“In this work, for the lines drawn to render letters and pictures—the inside and outside divided by those lines, and the lines that emerge in the tension between inside and outside—I drew each on supports of various origins. I overlay onto this work a landscape where the willow’s long lines waveringly intersect within the mist. (Ai Yamaguchi)”
No matter what support she uses, it’s a work you can tell is by Ai Yamaguchi.
