News has arrived about a special exhibition by Kohei Nawa. It is the special exhibition “Foam,” to be held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
In this exhibition, Kohei Nawa’s installation work of foam and light, “Foam,” will be shown.
The piece depicts how countless small bubbles that ceaselessly well up gradually gather together, forming an autonomous, organic structure as a collective mass of foam.
Each bubble, endlessly repeating the simple processes of generation and disappearance, resembles the fundamental behavior of cells that sustain metabolism and circulation, evoking in the viewer associations with the origins of life.
Artist Statement
Along with the slight ripples of the liquid, “Foam” ceaselessly wells up one after another.
The tiny bubbles gradually gather to cover the surface of the liquid, and as an aggregate of foam, they autonomously form an organic structure. The rising volume becomes saturated, continues to swell, and at times withers and drops to the ground. Kohei Nawa

A free public showing of a work by internationally active sculptor Kohei Nawa
Kohei Nawa has continued to release works that break down the fixed notions of sculpture, using materials such as transparent glass beads and prism sheets. Most recently, his monumental sculpture “Throne” was exhibited inside the Louvre Pyramid in France, drawing significant attention. In this special exhibition, “Foam,” which caused a major stir at the Aichi Triennale 2013, will be presented free of charge in its latest version.
A spectacular installation of bubbles welling up in darkness, evoking in viewers the birth of life
Just as cells repeat metabolism and circulation, bubbles are born and disappear one after another. These bubbles gather together, are given light, and emerge as a colossal object reminiscent of a living organism, overwhelming those who see it.
Artist Profile
Kohei Nawa
Sculptor / Director of SANDWICH Inc. / Professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design
Born in 1975. Based in Kyoto. Completed his doctoral program in sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2003. In 2009, he established “SANDWICH,” a platform for creative production in Kyoto. Centering on his original concept of “PixCell,” he makes full use of various materials and technologies to expand the possibilities of sculpture. In recent years, he has also engaged in architectural and stage projects, generating space and art simultaneously. Until February 2019, his monumental sculpture “Throne” was exhibited inside the Louvre Pyramid in France.
