We visited the “Triennale di Milano 2019,” held in Milan, Italy.

The theme of Triennale di Milano 2019 is “Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival.”
Rendered literally, it might read: “broken nature — design that takes on humanity’s survival.”
Emilija Skarnulyte “MAINFOLD”
On the first floor, at the “Lithuanian Pavilion,” we were drawn into “MAINFOLD” by Emilija Skarnulyte.
Emilija Skarnulyte is a young female video artist and filmmaker who was 32 years old at the time of the exhibition.
Works Exhibited
Emilija Skarnulyte presented two works.
- Sirenomelia, 2018 – on going, 12′, HD
- Mirror Matter, 2018 – on going, 12′, HD — I would like to introduce both together with their footage.
*The works exhibited at the Triennale di Milano had been newly re-edited, and were staged with the use of mirrors as well.
Sirenomelia
A video work filmed at the submarine base of the Royal Norwegian Navy and NATO in the Svalbard archipelago.
Mirror Matter
The visual beauty of Mirror Matter was staggering.
I also captured a short clip on site.
It may give you a small sense of the atmosphere of the space.
Her works engage with the great challenges confronting humanity.
Posing the fundamental questions of where we come from, where we are, and where we are heading, they close in poetic imagery.
Most recently, she won the “Future Generation Art Prize” — the art award of Ukraine’s PinchukArtCentre — receiving a prize of USD 100,000.
A solo exhibition is also reportedly scheduled for 2020. She is an artist whose future work I very much look forward to.
