Triennale di Milano 2019 is a contemporary art festival held once every three years.
Beginning in 1923, it is a historic art festival that reached its 22nd edition in 2019.
The venue is Triennale Milano itself, also known as the “Triennale Design Museum” — a facility that reportedly exhibits Triennale-related contemporary art even outside the art festival’s run.
Broken Nature — Design Takes on Human Survival
The subtitle of Triennale di Milano 2019, which we visited this time, was “Broken Nature,” carrying the accompanying phrase “Design Takes on Human Survival.”

True to the theme, many works questioned the coexistence of humans and nature, but the modes of expression were diverse.
There were also many Japanese artists exhibiting, and they seemed to make a notable presence among the younger generation of artists.
Participating artists came from around the world, and the festival felt open — each nation’s perspective could be sensed.
The country-by-country layout also made the exhibition easy to navigate.
That said, despite being called a Triennale, it is held within a single museum, and the scale is such that all works can be seen in a few hours to half a day. If you go expecting a massive event, you may be disappointed. It might be a good plan to spend the day leisurely — enjoying the museum shop, the in-house restaurant, and the surrounding park — as a way to wash off urban stress.
