Izumi Kato “LIKE A ROLLING SNOWBALL”

The exhibition “Izumi Kato – LIKE A ROLLING SNOWBALL” will be held at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Shinagawa, Tokyo) and its annex Hara Museum ARC (Shibukawa, Gunma).

Izumi Kato began his career with paintings and has since developed dynamic installations using a wide range of materials including wood carvings, soft vinyl, stone, and fabric, while also newly engaging in printmaking. His ambitious creative activities have attracted significant attention.

This exhibition will be held at two museums, with each venue presenting exhibits unique to its space.

Presenting about 30 latest works to showcase the current state of Izumi Kato and forecast his future

In Gallery 1, with its atrium ceiling, an installation will be shown using large-scale fabric works derived from Kato’s drawings — one of his new endeavors.
Throughout the entire museum, approximately 30 latest works including paintings and sculptures will be on view, revealing the current state of Kato’s expressive world with vivid brushstroke traces still fresh.
The intimate viewing experience unique to the former private residence may offer opportunities to discover new facets of Kato’s work.
Please also pay attention to the spatial composition using display cases that reflect Kato’s characteristic attention to presentation.

Highlights at Hara Museum ARC

Tracing about 25 years of creative history, from early paintings to recent works

Approximately 100 works, including previously unreleased pieces, comprehensively introduce the artist’s quarter-century of activity, from early to recent works.
The human-like forms that appear in Kato’s works can already be seen in his paintings from the mid-1990s.
By bringing together representative works from his early period to the present in the open, symmetrical space of Hara Museum ARC, viewers can trace the process by which this motif has evolved while expanding the range of materials and techniques.
Additionally, in the 13-meter-high main gallery, sculptures of various sizes using soft vinyl and stone will be exhibited alongside representative large-scale wood carvings.

The exhibition title, a play on Bob Dylan’s famous song “LIKE A ROLLING STONE,” is delightful.
This will be Izumi Kato’s first solo exhibition in Japan in some time. We look forward to it!
