NEW EMOTION
I visited “NEW EMOTION,” an exhibition by three Tokyo University of the Arts graduate artists—Ryu Kawada, Koichiro Tada, and Takanosuke Yasui.
The venue is the “A/D Gallery” at Roppongi Hills.
With the timing that Chiharu Shiota’s solo exhibition was being held at the Mori Art Museum in the same building, Koichiro Tada’s bright red portrait work was displayed facing you as you rode the escalator up to the venue.
All the works on display are new works created in 2019.
Ryu Kawada
As the title NEW EMOTION suggests, Ryu Kawada’s works shine with “emo”-ness—showing his forte, still life, in two large canvas works, among others, with his usual excellence on display.

Koichiro Tada
Koichiro Tada likewise exhibited mainly the portrait works he has been developing.
I heard that his works change depending on the sense of distance from the motif. Centered on the portrait series, the more abstracted works become 《顔無しの見えない-朝》, while the works closer to the real world become the red 《「君」について》 series.
Facing the red portrait works (the 《「君」について》 series), I felt as if the red color was numbing my vision, falling into a trip-like state. They were very memorable, fine works.
Takanosuke Yasui
Many of Yasui’s exhibited works used canvas or panels, with only a single sculpture on display.
That said, Yasui’s canvas works can also be perceived as three-dimensional works. Once you see them, their distinctive surface texture will leave a strong impression.
It was a venue full of heat, as if the three young artists had each poured out all their energy.
