“Izumi Kato — LIKE A ROLLING SNOWBALL” at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art
I visited Izumi Kato’s solo exhibition “LIKE A ROLLING SNOWBALL.” The venue is the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Shinagawa.
This exhibition shares the same title as the show that opened earlier at Hara Museum ARC.

The show at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art focuses on new works. The originally announced number of pieces was 30, but the actual exhibition featured 69 works — more than double — reflecting an ambitious and committed presentation.
Most of the works are dated 2019, evidence of Kato’s vigorously active production.
Centered on sculpture, lithographs, and painting, the show densely presented Izumi Kato’s endearingly eerie works.
The space is smaller than Hara Museum ARC and included fewer large-scale pieces, but with so many works on display, the exhibition was rich and rewarding.
Izumi Kato is represented by the gallery PERROTIN, which serves as the sales window for his works.
Whether the newly exhibited works will be available for purchase remains to be seen, but many domestic and international collectors are apparently on waiting lists.
Given his popularity, acquiring one is extremely difficult, though lithographs may still be a possibility.
Izumi Kato’s lithographs are produced at “Idem Paris,” the Parisian lithography atelier featured in Maha Harada’s novel “The Tableau of Beautiful Fools.”
