The Legendary Photographer Born in New York: Saul Leiter Forever
In 2017, photographer Saul Leiter’s first retrospective in Japan was held at Bunkamura The Museum, generating great acclaim.
Saul Leiter had been a leading fashion photographer in New York from the 1950s, but in the 1980s he withdrew from commercial photography and disappeared from the public eye. What suddenly pulled him back from oblivion was the 2006 publication of his photo book “Early Color” by the German publisher Steidl. Already in his 80s at the time, his works stunned the international photography world, sparking exhibitions and photo-book publications around the world, followed by a documentary film. It became an opportunity for those encountering Saul Leiter for the first time to understand the wonder of this photographer.
Endowed with an innate sense of color, Saul Leiter has been called a “pioneer of color photography.”
He left this world without organizing the vast majority of his output, including approximately 80,000 color photographs, and the ongoing “excavation” of his work continues to this day at the Saul Leiter Foundation.
This exhibition, drawing on the vast archive that could not be fully mined at the previous show, unveils lesser-known facets of Saul Leiter through many unpublished works — including world premieres — and an abundance of related material.
