[Art Collector’s Etiquette] Introducing a “Poster Case” Recommended for Protection and Storage

Lately I’ve been buying more posters.
Printing technology has improved, and even print works are of very high quality, reproducing the original remarkably closely. Even if an original is out of reach, a print poster lets you collect quite affordably.

Just the other day, I had the chance to buy a poster by Teppei Takeda, whose Tokyo debut solo show at MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY sold out the same day.

Once you start collecting posters, immediately thinking about protection and storage is the nature of an art collector.

Poster Cases

A must-have when collecting poster works is a poster case (poster tube).
Here are the situations where a poster case comes in handy:

1. For safely carrying it home at purchase, or transporting it when requesting framing — as a protective case.
2. When storing it at home or in a warehouse — as a storage case.

To keep it from creasing under impact or getting wet or dirty from rain and the like, a hard case made of a material such as plastic is suitable.

The other day I spoke with an art-university professor, who said it’s normal to store even large photographic works rolled up. If you need to store things in limited space, a poster case is sure to help.

Let me introduce some recommended poster cases.
If you want one cheaply, even the 100-yen shop Daiso sells one at a special price of “¥300.”
However, I tried it, and the item wasn’t that good. It’s a telescoping type, but the stopper structure is weak; the extended tube slipped right out, and the poster inside nearly got scratched. I can’t quite recommend it.

What I recommend this time is “DRAWING PACK” VP80×600 by a maker called Honda Plus.
It easily holds even an A0-size poster — a large-capacity product with excellent protection.

As you can see, it’s transparent, so you can see through it. What’s inside? You can check without even opening it. It’s made in Germany, with a cool-looking design.
Despite being a properly made product, the price is a gentle ¥1,865 (excl. tax).

I bought mine at the Itoya Annex in Ginza.
As far as I could tell, it doesn’t seem to be sold online. You may have no choice but to find it at a large stationery store.
