Hiroshima Triennale 2020 in BINGO
It has been announced that “Hiroshima Triennale 2020 in BINGO,” the first large-scale arts festival in Hiroshima, will be held. The event will run for a total of 65 days, from September 12 through November 15, 2020.
“Hiroshima Triennale 2020 in BINGO” will take place in the Bingo region of eastern Hiroshima Prefecture — a land where, from ancient times, people have gathered and mingled via land and sea routes, undergoing continuous transformations up to the present day.
This year’s theme is “Beyond.”
Moving between the cities of Mihara, Onomichi, and Fukuyama, the festival offers visitors the chance to see, through the eyes of contemporary art practitioners, what lies beyond the character of a place and the flow of time — and to imagine what can be seen “beyond.” An art festival that creates such opportunities to go “beyond.”
An art competition targeting young artists will also be held at one of the venues. *Application guidelines to be announced in December 2019.
Five Features of Hiroshima Triennale 2020 in BINGO
Here we summarize the five features of Hiroshima Triennale 2020.
(1) Held in a region where contemporary art has taken root
Collaborating with locally-rooted art groups active in the Bingo region
These include “Art Base Momoshima,” created by renovating a former junior high school building; the “Onomichi Vacant House Renovation Project,” which repurposes vacant homes in Onomichi as ateliers and guest houses to address the issue of empty houses; and “AIR Onomichi,” which regenerates and creates anew from vacant and abandoned houses on the sloping terrain of Onomichi’s old town district through residency-based artistic activities. The festival collaborates with such art groups, building on their track record of activities.
(2) Sites chosen to preserve strong traces of local history
About 20 venues selected, including places and facilities that once bustled with local residents
Among the chosen venues are “CINE PATIO” in Mihara, once a bustling cinema; the “Former Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Onomichi Branch” in Onomichi, built in 1938 (Showa 13); and “Fukuyama Museum of Art,” which opened in Fukuyama in 1988 as a project commemorating the 70th anniversary of the municipality, in response to citizens’ requests.
(3) A rich showing of works by Japanese artists
By showcasing many works by Japanese artists — especially those with ties to Hiroshima — the festival aims to convey the appeal of Japanese work to visitors from both within and outside Japan.
Participating artists will be announced in sequence going forward.
(4) Providing arenas for young artists to shine
Through an art competition for young artists and various projects developed in collaboration with universities within the prefecture, the festival provides opportunities for emerging artists to shine.
(5) Contemporary art × the distinctive charm of the region
Alongside contemporary art, various programs will be developed so that visitors can experience the appeal of Setouchi cuisine, Hiroshima sake, and the region’s rich natural scenery. *Details to be announced later.
